California State University, Fresno was founded in 1911 as Fresno State Normal School. Ten years later, it became a teacher’s college. Since 1949, the university has offered advanced degrees. Known by the popular nickname “Fresno State,” the school occupies one of the 23 campuses of the California State University, one of the largest systems of higher education in the world. The university is accredited by the California Board of Education and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It has 26 nationally accredited departmental programs, among the highest number within the CSU system. In 2007, more than 22,000 students were enrolled and approximately 5,000 students completed work for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Fresno State’s 388-acre main campus and its 1,011-acre University Farm are located at the northeast edge of Fresno at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range. College of the Sequoias. College of the Sequoias is a California community college located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley in Visalia, which is 16 miles from Tulare. The college, like most of the early community colleges in the state, developed out of the local public school. In 1926, the Visalia Unified School District established Visalia Junior College as a department in the high school. In 1939, it built the current college campus. A decade later, it created an independent College of the Sequoias Community College District. A comprehensive community college, College of the Sequoias is focused on student learning that leads to productive work, lifelong learning and community involvement. The school is dedicated to assisting its diverse student population achieve their transfer and/or occupational objectives.
